Public Bathhouse

A snap button is remodeled in 3D software and panelized by the software Pepakura. The focus in this remodeling study is the section. A typical snap button has an identical radial section. By deviating the sectons of the button in both physical and digital models, the relationships between PANELIZATION and CURVATURE are uncovered.... and made ready for play.

When the points on the curves change, the curvature of the surfaces change. One can join the adjusted panels tightly to form fluid, continous space, or loosely to create openings. The cracks introduce light into the space. This technique is used in designing a public bathhouse in DUMBO, at Pearl Square, Brooklyn.

The bathhouse comprises two different kinds of bathing experiences; either fast or the slow. The strategy is to create interlocking pathways within a water structure. The structure transports water in different temperatures throughout the whole bathhouse. The slow sauna pathway carries hot water and the fast shower tunnel carries relatively cool water. This enveloping structure is both the skin and the core.

The 2D manipulation from the Pepakura panel maintains the general pattern of the envelope and provides gaps for lighting and ventilation. This condition between open and closed is used in the public bathhouse design to create a semi-private condition.
